GOLD STANDARD EVENTS
Huntsville Alabama 28 January 2023
The brothers of Psi Kappa Kappa Chapter in Huntsville AL,
affectionately known as the “Rocket City” are off with a blast in 2023. They have been busy meeting and
mentoring the young men in their Gold Standard Program.
They sponsored a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) session on 28 January at
the world renowned HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. HudsonAlpha is a Huntsville
based world-class Institute with a global reach. Ms. Dasi Price, Ed.S., the HudsonAlpha Director
of Student Experiences provided the group with a great overview of HudsonAlpha, and its
mission. Its mission is three-fold, conducting genomics-based research to improve human
health and well-being; sparking entrepreneurship and economic development; and providing
educational outreach to nurture the next generation of biotech researchers and entrepreneurs,
as well as to create a biotech literate public. Ms. Price also shared with the group the many
enrichment opportunities available for students at HudsonAlpha.
The brothers extended the right hand of fellowship for this event and invited local Boy Scout
Troop 102 to participate in this session. Overall, it was a great session. It was informative with
interactive participation.
Civil Rights Institute Birmingham Alabama 11 February 2023:
In celebration of Black History Month, and to educate their mentees on black history, the
brothers of Psi Kappa Kappa sponsored a trip to the Birmingham Institute of Civil Rights, and the 16th Street Baptist Church. The Civil Rights Institute is a large interpretive museum and research center. It details the
events and actions of the Birmingham campaign of 1963, its Children's Crusade, and the other
Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. It tells a great story of the movement.
They wrapped up the day after touring the 16th Street Baptist Church. This was the church that
served as the primary headquarters for organizers in Birmingham during the civil rights
movement of the 1960s. Minister Fred Shuttlesworth was the primary local organizer. While
Martin Luther King Jr. and James Bevel were active representing the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference (SCLC). They led the Children’s Crusade, which taught the students
nonviolence in protesting.
This is also the church where one of the most extreme acts of violence took place against African
Americans. White supremacists boomed the church on September 15, 1963, killings four little
innocent girls. Many credit this as the key event that highlighted racism and conditions that
blacks were enduring in the south. It gave energy to the movement.
